As part of our IMCTF programme, “Aacharya Vandam – Reverence for Teachers – The Concept of Guru” was performed on the 5th of September by the students of Swamy’s Group of Schools. The term Guru in samskritam combines the syllables “Gu” and “Ru”. The syllable ‘Gu’ indicates “darkness” and the syllable ‘Ru’ signifies “destroyer of darkness”. Because of his power to destroy the darkness of ignorance and lead to knowledge, Guru is thus named, says the oldest spiritual literature, Upanisad.
The Indian tradition has always revered the teacher, as evident from the following verse :
Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣṇur Gurur Devo Maheśvarah
Guru Sākṣāt Para Brahma Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namah
The students performed Padha Pooja with piety and reverence for their gurus and sought their blessings.
